Everything I Learned About Teams Is From RPGs

For my Twitter followers, probably more than a few of you notice that I tweet about games. A lot. It’s my second passion (next to cooking) and playing video games, for me, is like reading a really good ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ book. My favorite genre is the role-playing (RPG) kind, games like Final Fantasy, Tales of Vesperia, and whole lot of others. So how does this involve team building?
In order to progress, and ultimately win, in an RPG you need to have a team that is balanced in abilities present in the game. You aren’t going to get terribly far with a party full of wizards, for example. But if you supplement a wizard with a close-range attacker, and maybe with an agile character capable of quick strikes, now your wizard can throw his FIREBALLS OF DOOM with reckless abandon (or at least until his mana runs out). All right, so here’s what I’m getting at.
Any team you’re a part of – in a sport, at work, or anywhere – will be successful if the skills and abilities of the team members are complimentary. Assembling a group of HR-focused people to implement a networking strategy will prove to be pretty disastrous for your business. To build a great team, you must take the time to identify and evaluate possible members’ skills and how they fit in to the overall goal of forming the team. In short, taking the time to carefully construct a team will pay off. And you’ll ultimately win.

Really interesting comparison. I also feel it’s very important to have members in your team that have different strengths in order to have an effectively balanced team.
